Safety and Experience
Newborn portraits are arguably the most important photos you will ever have, so choosing the right person to capture this time it’s very important. Just because someone has newborn photography listed on their website doesn't mean they are skilled in knowing how to safely handle, pose, and soothe your baby. Make sure to choose someone who specializes and is trained in newborn photography and comes highly recommended. Not only its the integrity of your baby's photos at stake but the overall success of your session may entirely depend on your photographers ability to calm and soothe and read your baby's cues just as well as you can.
Things to ask when looking for a newborn photographer:
1) How long have then been they been in NEWBORN photography? Not just photography in general. Photographer doesn’t mean newborn photographer. It’s definitely a niche market and requires a ton of training and experience.
(6+ years in highly recommend)
2) Do they have their OWN studio and offer all the props and wraps?
Yes, please. Dedicated newborn photographers provide quality props and wraps that are either created specifically for newborn photography or they have the knowledge of what type to purchase and HOW to use them without compromising newborn safety. There are things to watch for when wrapping and posing newborns to keep them safe.
3) How much do they charge?
Newborn photographers who aren’t charging very much, don’t have enough experience. Period. Why? Legit newborn photographers pay taxes, because they are legitimate businesses. If they charge taxes, you can pretty much guarantee they are experienced.
They care to run their business the right way. You get what you pay for is definitely accurate in photography.
4) INSURANCE
If they don’t have legitimate insurance DO NOT BOOK WITH THEM.
If they have insurance, there is a way way better chance that they are running a real business and have enough experience to know that they need it.
5) If they offer quality products like prints, albums, etc, that are coming from their personal printers, they are a legitimate business.
Why does this make a difference? If your photographer offers products, usually they are registered to have a business with the federal government. This is because in order to print with real, quality, professional printers, you have to have a tax number registered with the government.
Please don’t put your newborn in the hands of someone who could potentially mishandle your precious baby.
